Work Hours Calculator

Find the time you worked in a shift, including overnight shifts and unpaid breaks.

How the work-hours calculation is built

The calculator first measures elapsed time from the start time to the end time. If the end time is earlier than the start time, Hourformula treats the shift as crossing midnight into the next day.

worked minutes = elapsed minutes − unpaid break minutes

The result is shown in hours and minutes, decimal hours, and total minutes so you can use the same shift in different kinds of calculations without converting it again by hand.

Worked example

Suppose a shift runs from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM with a 30-minute unpaid break. The elapsed span is 8 hours 30 minutes, or 510 minutes. Subtracting the break leaves 480 worked minutes.

510 − 30 = 480 minutes = 8 hr 0 min = 8.00 decimal hours

For an overnight example, 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM is treated as an eight-hour span before any unpaid break is removed.

Decimal hours are a different notation

Clock-style minutes use base 60, while decimal hours use base 10. That is why 8 hours 30 minutes becomes 8.50 hours, not 8.30. The 30-minute portion is 30 ÷ 60 = 0.50 hour.

What to check before using the result

  • Enter only unpaid break time in the break field.
  • Use the overnight behavior only when the shift actually ends the following day.
  • If a shift spans more than one full day, use an explicit date-aware workflow instead of a clock-only assumption.
  • The calculator measures time; it does not decide whether a break is paid or whether the hours are legally compensable.
