What Is a Business Day?

In Hourformula's business-day calculators, a business day is a Monday-through-Friday date that is not manually entered as an excluded date.

Saturday and Sunday are skipped automatically.

Hourformula business day = Monday–Friday, minus any supported manual exclusions

This is a calculation model, not a universal legal definition. Organizations, jurisdictions, banks, delivery services, contracts, and other systems may use different holiday or operating calendars.

Hourformula's business-day model

The site's business-day tools start with weekdays. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday are eligible. Saturday and Sunday are not.

Where a calculator provides an Excluded dates field, you can also enter known weekday holidays, closures, or other dates that should not count.

Hourformula does not automatically load a US federal holiday calendar or any other jurisdiction-specific holiday list.

Business days versus calendar days

Calendar-day counting considers every date in sequence. Business-day counting filters that sequence to the eligible weekdays in the selected model.

For example, an inclusive range from Friday through the following Tuesday contains five calendar dates: Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday.

Under Hourformula's weekday model, only Friday, Monday, and Tuesday count, so the inclusive business-day total is 3.

Do weekends count?

No. Under Hourformula's default model, Saturday and Sunday do not count as business days.

That means one business day after Friday is Monday, assuming Monday has not been manually excluded.

Likewise, one business day before Monday is Friday.

What about holidays and closures?

A weekday can still be a holiday, office closure, or other non-working date. Hourformula cannot infer those dates because they differ by year, place, organization, and use case.

In calculators that accept excluded dates, enter the relevant dates explicitly. If Monday would normally count but you exclude that Monday, the calculator skips it.

Adding a weekend date to the exclusions does not change the result because weekends are already skipped.

Start and end dates can change the count

For a between-dates calculation, endpoint handling matters.

The Business Days Calculator includes both the start and end dates when its Include start and end dates option is checked, as long as those dates are eligible business days.

When that option is unchecked, both endpoints are excluded from the count.

For add/subtract calculations, the starting date itself is not counted. The tool begins moving forward or backward from the following calendar step.

When this model is useful

A Monday-through-Friday model is useful for planning deadlines, comparing date ranges, estimating weekday schedules, and performing repeatable date arithmetic.

Before relying on a result for a contract, filing deadline, payment rule, shipping promise, or other external requirement, confirm the calendar and endpoint convention that actually applies to that situation.
