How to Count Working Days in a Year
Hourformula's Working Days in Year Calculator counts every Monday through Friday across all twelve months of the selected year.
Working days in year = sum of all Monday–Friday dates from January through December
Weekends are excluded. Public holidays, leave, shutdowns, and organization-specific non-working days are not subtracted automatically.
A year is not exactly 52 weeks
Fifty-two complete weeks contain 364 days.
A common year has 365 days, so one additional calendar day remains. A leap year has 366 days, so two additional days remain.
Every complete week contributes five weekdays. Whether the extra one or two dates are weekdays or weekends determines the final annual count.
Base calculation from 52 weeks
52 weeks × 5 weekdays = 260 weekdays
The remaining one or two calendar dates can increase that total when they fall Monday through Friday.
That is why annual weekday counts can differ even before holidays are considered.
Example: 2026
Under Hourformula's Monday-through-Friday model, 2026 contains:
261 working days
This result is the sum of the twelve monthly weekday counts. It does not subtract public holidays.
Monthly breakdown for 2026
| Month | Weekdays |
|---|---|
| January | 22 |
| February | 20 |
| March | 22 |
| April | 22 |
| May | 21 |
| June | 22 |
| July | 23 |
| August | 21 |
| September | 22 |
| October | 22 |
| November | 21 |
| December | 23 |
Adding these values gives 261 Monday-through-Friday dates.
Why a workplace total can be lower
A calendar weekday total is not the same as the number of days an employee or organization actually works.
Public holidays, vacation, leave, closures, shift patterns, part-time schedules, and other rules may reduce or otherwise change the real working-day total.
Hourformula's annual calculator intentionally does not guess those inputs.
Weekday count versus business-day count
The annual tool answers a broad weekday-count question and has no manual-exclusion field.
For a specific date range where you know certain weekday holidays or closures, use the Business Days Calculator and provide those excluded dates explicitly.
