| Clock in | Clock out | Unpaid break | Worked time |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7:30 AM | 3:30 PM | 0 min | 8 hr 0 min |
| 8:15 AM | 5:00 PM | 45 min | 8 hr 0 min |
| 6:00 PM | 2:00 AM | 0 min | 8 hr 0 min |
| 11:30 PM | 7:30 AM | 30 min | 7 hr 30 min |
How to read this chart
Worked time is the elapsed duration minus the stated unpaid break. Earlier clock-out times are treated as the following day; elapsed time before breaks is different.
How the examples are interpreted
Each row compares clock-in, clock-out, and an unpaid break. The last column shows worked time after subtracting that break, not the full elapsed duration. When clock-out is earlier on the clock, Hourformula treats it as the following day.
Same-day and overnight spans
A same-day example subtracts the start directly from the end. An overnight example is split across midnight or treated as an end time in the next 24-hour cycle.
For example, 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM is eight hours elapsed. With a 30-minute unpaid break, the worked time is 7 hr 30 min. Use the Work Hours Calculator when a break should be excluded; use Time Duration Calculator only for elapsed time before breaks.
